Tanzania

This page provides all the information you need to know about the UCC trip to Tanzania. From fund raising to our plans whilst in Africa, you'll find all the information here.

AMAP School
The AMAP (African Modern Arts Project) school for street children The school is located in Bogomoyo on the east coast in Tanzania. It is run by Saidi Mbungo a local artist who specialises in wood sculptures.  It provides education for children from  4 years to 11 years. The school is in a building with 3 small classrooms and an outdoor play area, 75 children attend nursery regularly. There are also 85 children in years 1, 2, 3 and 4. AMAP employs three teachers and is also supported by volunteers from around the world. Teaching includes maths , English and Swahili.  It employs two local cooks to provide breakfast and lunch for the children. The school provides the children with uniforms too; these are made by Saidi’s wife Pili. Saidi funds the school from his own business selling his artwork and through his wife’s business designing and selling clothes. Both Saidi and Pili are talented artists. They also rely on charitable donations for additional funds. The school is in the process of registering with the Tanzania government as a charity which will help with this. Sometimes Saidi runs out of money and has to use his own money to pay teachers’ salaries and for food for the children.

The donation from Caterite will mean that meals for the nursery children are
funded for a whole school year. This will make a huge difference to Saidi being
secure in the knowledge that the funds are available. Saidi said he was so happy that his children will no longer be hungry at school.  UCC has links with AMAP for over four years now and each time we visit we have become more involved in the work of this exceptional school. The next trip is in 2015 when we will hopefully work with the school for 3-4 days. Sharing experiences not just with the children but also with the teachers, offering support with new methods of teaching and learning.

UCC is working with Gap Medics to providing year-round hospital work experience placements abroad to students from the age of 16. They are a UK company whose aim to help students gain valuable experience to apply for medical school. Placements can be undertaken in pre-medicine, pre-nursing, pre-midwifery & pre-dentistry, giving an insight into the work of healthcare professionals before they begin their clinical training. Students gain beneficial experience to help them with uni applications & interviews, or simply give them an insight into whether this is the career route they wish to go down before dedicating themselves to years of study.

Currently we have 4 students going on a Gap Medics Placement as part of the school Tanzania trip in July 2015. This placement is a week-long in a government run hospital. Gap Medics placements are also recognized by ASDAN (The Award Scheme Development & Accreditation Network.) Their healthcare placements have been checked & verified against all conditions for the Universities Award. Given the nature of our programmes & number of learning hours a student will experience, simply going on a Gap Medics placement means that you are entitled to receive a Universities Certificate after you have completed your placement with us. Many UK universities acknowledge its value & it features in the UCAS guidance for applicants to university as something noteworthy to mention on your UCAS form.

If you are interested in finding out more information about the Gap Medics programme & how this fits into the Tanzanian trip, please contact Mrs Hodgson in the science department.
