WELCOME TO THE SCIENCE DEPARTMENT
KEY STAGE 3
After an introductory topic on Safety and Skills at the start of Year 7 we follow the popular 'Exploring Science' course with topics on Chemistry, Physics, Biology, Earth Science and Environmental Science. There is an emphasis on investigative science allowing students to plan, carry out, analyse and evaluate investigations of scientific ideas. Hands-on practicals are common and form an important part of students’ skill development. Students develop their skills in handling and displaying data, build an appreciation of the ‘Scientific Method’ and how models are developed to explain observations. There is also a strong link into how science affects people in their everyday life and the role of science and scientists in the world as well as relevance to everyday issues.
KEY STAGE 4
There is a diverse and flexible choice of pathways to enable learners to choose a course that best suits them and enables them to be successful.  At GCSE we offer: Triple Award Separate Sciences, Science A & Additional Science – all with AQA.  There is also a strong vocational route with EDEXCEL’s Level 2 Applied Science BTEC Diploma or Extended Certificate. KEY STAGE 5
A-level: We offer AS and A2 Biology, Chemistry & Physics. Biology & Physics follow the Salters context-led courses with EDEXCEL, Chemistry follows the AQA concept-led course.
KS5 BTEC: New for 2011 we are introducing Level 3 Applied Science Medical Science BTEC.
SCIENCE IN THE WIDER COMMUNITY
We run a lot of extra-curricular events/trips to enhance students' experiences of science. Recently: Year 8 Girls into Engineering; Year 12 and 13 Engineering your Future; Year 12 Chester Zoo; Year 9 and 10 Ever Wondered Why?
