WELCOME TO THE MATHS DEPARTMENT
We aim to provide our pupils with every opportunity to reach their full potential in Mathematics and in doing so to be equipped for the future with both mathematical skills and knowledge alongside qualifications. We believe that learning in Mathematics should be seen as developing logical thinking and we hope to encourage students to enjoy solving problems as well as to appreciate the pattern and power of Mathematics.
KEY STAGE 3
The Key Stage 3 Mathematics curriculum builds upon the National Numeracy Strategy already implemented in the Primary schools. Students will have the opportunity to consolidate previous knowledge as well as work at higher levels in order that they experience both success and challenge. During the Autumn Term of Year 7 students are taught in form groups. Students are assessed by October half term and the form groups are re-organised into similar ability groupings.
KEY STAGE 4
We give every student the opportunity to achieve as high a GCSE grade as is possible. The vast majority of students take the Edexcel modular GCSE course with some students taking either the linear course or an alternative Entry Level Mathematics programme of study.  Click here for more course details, or in the links box to the right for Key Stage 4 course outlines and overviews.
Students at UCC enjoy Mathematics. This is reflected in the large number of pupils who chose to continue with Mathematics at post-16 and thereafter at University. Currently, over 60 students in Years 12 and 13 are studying Maths or Further Maths. In the recent summer examinations all Year 13 students passed A-level Mathematics, with one student achieving the new A* grade.
Mathematics and Further Mathematics follow the AQA modular approach.
MATHS IN THE WIDER COMMUNITY
Many of our students also take part in the Junior UK Maths Challenge run by the University of Leeds Mathematics Department. We have also entered a team of Year 8 and Year 9 students into an interschool Maths Quiz.
We are committed to our students' mathematics education, not only in lesson time but also in providing one-to-one tuition should extra support be needed.
