WELCOME TO THE SOCIAL SCIENCE DEPARTMENT - CHILD & HEALTH CARE STUDIES
HEALTH AND SOCIAL CARE
The Heath and Social Care sector is the biggest employer in the UK and there are opportunities to pursue a wide and varied range of careers following study of this subject. However, career opportunities are not the only reason to choose this subject. The areas that are covered by the course include skills and knowledge which are useful to everyone in all aspects of life. Things like communication, health promotion, psychology and social trends are all interesting and relevant to in today’s complex society.
You can undertake the GCSE Health and Social Care which is a course that investigates the five major client groups and their care needs as well as service provision. You will complete a controlled assessment that involves research into a local health and social care service. Then in year 11 you will investigate personal relationships.
A LEVEL SINGLE AND DOUBLE AWARD
You can study for the OCR Health and Social Care Single award in the sixth form. The units covered include:- promoting quality care, communication in care, promoting good health, research, social trends and care practice and provision. You can also undertake the OCR Health and Social Care as a Double award (this gives you two A levels). This offers the opportunity to deepen and broaden your knowledge of this subject. Topics include:- mental health issues, child development and caring for people with additional needs. Most students progress to university whilst others gain high quality employment in the community.
CHILD CARE
You can undertake the GCSE Child Development which is a course that investigates the family and caring for children. You will undertake a research unit and a longitudinal study of a child.
KEY STAGE 5
You can undertake the
Child Care Education CACHE Diploma at Key Stage 5. This course of study will give insights into how to satisfy children's care and learning needs in a variety of settings, studying subjects such as the psychology, physiology and sociology of childhood.
CHILD AND HEALTH CARE STUDIES IN THE WIDER COMMUNITY
Through placements both in Child Care and Health and Social Care settings you will be working within the care community throughout your course. Opportunities to take part in a variety of placements allow you to gain a greater understanding of the wide range of care settings in the area.
