WELCOME TO THE SOCIAL SCIENCE DEPARTMENT - GOVERNMENT & POLITICS
Everything you do is political, because politics is about power. Government is about how a country makes laws that regulate what people can do and how they can go about their business. Should you share out the wealth of a country or should you let some people be very rich? These are the questions that ideology asks and ideology is what governs ALL our lives, from the price we pay for milk to the availability of iphones and downloaded music. Even a row with your friend is ultimately political.
KEY STAGE 3
Unfortunately Politics is not available for students at this level but you will start to learn about it in Citizenship.
KEY STAGE 4
Still no politics but you will probably be interested in subjects like History and Sociology which you can do at GCSE.
A LEVEL
We follow the Edexcel A-level. The first year is spent looking at how we are governed. You will learn the processes of government and how we elect those who govern us. In the second year you will learn about ideologies that are the basis of political thought because they determine what the government will do in terms of taxation and spending. Will the poor pay for the rich or will the rich be taxed to help the poor? Will you choose: Labour, Conservative or perhaps a coalition?
GOVERNMENT AND POLITICS IN THE WIDER COMMUNITY
We run visits to London and Edinburgh as part of our programme. You will get a chance to visit the English and Scottish parliaments as well as spend some time in our capital cities.
