The Royal Visit 29th November 2011
Dec 12 2011
Despite the gale force wind and the horizontal rain Ullswater Community College gave a sunny welcome to His Royal Highness The Duke of Gloucester on 29th November 2011.

The Royal visit was agreed with Kensington Palace following a letter from School Councillors Emma Edgar, Charlotte Stobbs, Rebekah Hodgson and Aimee Martin to The Lord Lieutenant of Cumbria, Sir James Cropper, at the commencement of building work on our new Applied Learning Centre early in 2010.

His Royal Highness examined the work of students in Hair & Beauty, Motor Vehicle Engineering, Construction and in the Retail Unit before moving on to Cumberland Hall where he admired the Art work on display and was entertained by our Cheerleaders, The School Choir, Year 9 'Lindy Hop' dancers and performers in a dramatic extract from The Lord of the Flies. Before leaving the school The Duke of Gloucester also unveiled a slate plaque and signed the School Visitor's Book as a permanent reminder of his visit to UCC. Many of the students, however mistook the Duke of Gloucester for the Lord Lieutenant of Cumbria, Sir James Cropper who accompanied His Royal Highness in full formal dress complete with sword and peaked cap. His Royal Highness, however didn’t seem to mind the mistake too much!

Everyone who visited on the day was impressed with the fortitude of our students in braving the weather, the talents and skills of our students and the warmth of their welcome on this special day for Ullswater Community College.

(11:43 AM, 03/19/2013)

It’s interview season at UCC as we start thinking about next year’s curriculum and timetable in the light of staff changes and student options in Years 9 and 11. As a consequence, we get to talk about what goes on here and what candidates can expect life to be like if appointed...

John Hurt, Photographic Exhibitions and Badminton Championships
(12:58 PM, 02/25/2013)

We were all delighted to welcome John Hurt, Great Britain’s most celebrated and consistently brilliant actor from stage, the big screen and TV to UCC on Thursday 21 February. John Hurt was simply the most thrilling, talented and inspiring guest we could have wished for to launch our annual Branch Out competition, an event that encourages students to read books and to write their review on what they’ve read...

Term begins
(9:14 AM, 01/16/2013)

With Christmas now well and truly behind us and the hard part of winter still to come, I’ve had to dust off the documents reminding me who to phone in the event of a school closure – just so that I’m ready in the unlikely event that we have to respond to seriously bad weather.

Tanzania Presentation, GCSE Certificate presentation and A Christmas Carol
(9:34 AM, 12/11/2012) With just under two weeks remaining of the Autumn Term it’s hard to see how we will fit everything into the 9 days remaining. As I look at my diary for the next few days I’m astonished at the number of extra events and productions we have to fit into the time available and I can only admire the hard work and effort which goes into producing so many extra events at the end of a very busy term.

Prize Day, Blast from the Past and Wise Up
(3:21 PM, 11/09/2012) Our newly introduced Prize Day seemed to go down well at the end of last half term and I’ve received a good number of e-mails, letters and texts on this event. ‘Denzil’, from BBC’s Waterloo Road went down a storm with students from Years 7 to 13 and Sir James Cropper was also a big hit with students.

A New Term and a remarkable UCC resident
(1:26 PM, 09/11/2012) I’m sure I speak for everyone in saying how great it is to be back in school after a decidedly damp summer break.   We have a new Year 12 of 130 students and are pleased to hear from so many of the other Year 11 students who have enrolled at local colleges or begun apprenticeships. Year 11, of course...

Exams, Branch Out, Young Firefighters and Drama
(2:16 PM, 05/31/2012) The examination season is now well under way and the weather plays its traditional role at this time of the academic year, becoming as hot and sultry as possible. Revision, classroom study and homework are just that bit more difficult in 27ºC heat. The Year 10, 11, 12 and 13 students, however, continue to focus on the task in hand, attending revision sessions (10 hours of extra Science last Saturday) and logging on to our revision materials on the website.

Kielder Challenge, Rock Challenge and 'Educating Cumbria'
(12:33 PM, 05/11/2012)

A massive “well done” to students in our Strategically Resourced Provision (Eamont Block) for their success in the Kielder Challenge 3 weeks ago. The team of William Hulme, David Allen, Chloe Crawford, Rebecca Opeszek, Sam Pryke, Adam Ewbank, Chloe Verrall and Heather Coulson trained hard for this event in several lunchtime sessions. However, the team had to make last-minute changes to personnel and the new formation came together for the first time on the day of the event...

Branch Out, John Hurt and Futures Day
(10:54 AM, 03/06/2012)

One of the most important lessons I’ve learned over the last 14 years as Headteacher of various schools is that most of the best thing that happen in school have absolutely nothing to do with you; they are the product of exceptional staff or creative pupils or both. Over the last two school days, we launched our ‘Branch Out’ project, designed to encourage pupils to read more. Michelle Lewin...

It’s week 19 of the school year and the number of additional ‘revision Saturdays’ for GCSE students is already increasing in preparation for the summer examination sessions. A week last Saturday it was Philosophy and Ethics revision and this weekend it was GCSE Separate Science (71 attendees). Well done everyone for showing such amazing commitment, and to my staff for their hard work and effort on behalf of their pupils...
