Headteachers Blog 9 January 2015
Happy New Year to all our staff and students and welcome back to our Spring Term. Whilst Christmas Holidays are always a real pleasure, it’s always good to get back to the routine of the school year.
A Level Certificate Presentation Evening.
This week we had our A Level Certificate Presentation Evening at The Roundthorn and it’s good to see all our Year 13 students from last year together again after 19 weeks out there in the big wide world. The sense of occasion was also enhanced by the presence and input of our speaker, Dr Theo Weston MBE who talked about his own career and life, inspiring those present to aim high and set their sights on being the best.
Year 9 Options.
Our Year 9 students are now in the middle of the Options process and thinking hard about which subjects to take in Years 10 and 11. This is both a daunting and exciting time for all students and no doubt they’ll be quizzing other members of their family, teachers and friends for guidance on what subjects make most sense for their chosen career. There’s so much to choose between so we wish all of Year 9 good luck in getting their preferred subjects.
Invitation from Secretary of State for Education.
At the end of last term the Secretary of State wrote to me to ask if I would nominate two exceptional teachers from Ullswater Community College to attend a reception with her on 20 January 2015. The school has been selected for this honour as a result of its “great improvements over the past few years, as reflected in your most recent Ofsted rating”. The Rt Hon Nicky Morgan MP, Secretary of State for Education will greet our teachers at the reception in Lancaster House, London.
The two teachers we have nominated are Mrs J Thompson, Head of English and Mrs J Rutherford, second in the maths department. It was a hugely difficult decision which teachers to nominate because we have so many whose results are significantly higher than others nationally.
Jack and the Beanstalk
Finally, it’s Panto time again. Tickets are on sale for this unique annual event. Performances of Jack and the Beanstalk take place on Thursday 29th, Friday 30th and Saturday 31st January 2015. Tickets cost £3.00 for adults and £1.50 for concessions and these performances always sell out so get your tickets early to avoid disappointment.
