Have a great Christmas!
Last week the Coca-Cola Truck rolled in to Penrith to bring a little Christmas cheer to the centre of town. The Year 11 English Study Plus group took the opportunity to visit the truck and use it as inspiration for their class. Following on from the visit, students have written either discursively or creatively about the event.
Our very talented show-jumping team competed again over the weekend of 30 November at Blackdyke in the inter-school competition. The 90-cm class – comprising Sally Braithwaite, Anna Holliday, Tayla Purdham and Megan Vere-Hoose – jumped the big course confidently and finished 3rd out of 11 teams. The 75-cm class team of Molly Hale, Amy Idle, Megan McLean and Melissa Murphy finished 5th out of 16 schools. This is a super event and those present were very proud of the achievements of UCC students (and their mounts).
Year 11 certificate presentation evening
Last year’s Year 11 students received their hard-earned certificates in a special ceremony held in Penrith Methodist Church on Monday 1st December. Over 180 guests attended a splendid evening of celebration and success in the company of our guest of honour, mountaineer Simon Yates, who had us all spellbound with his talk about his lifetime achievements in Peru, India, Pakistan and Nepal. In addition, we had music from Emily Richardson and Josh Jackson and tea and cake to finish the event off beautifully. It was treat to see quite a few old faces from those who have continued their studies at various colleges or on work placements/apprenticeships.
UCC Christmas single
The new UCC Christmas Single Can UCC It’s Christmas was released at the end of last week. It’s a really catchy ‘dance style’ CD written and performed by students of the school and masterminded by Mr Shearer. Early sales are extremely positive and the BBC has requested a copy for broadcasting later this week.
As the end of another busy term approaches, we have our Carol Services to look forward to. On Monday and Tuesday, 8th and 9th December, we will take part in the Penrith Schools’ Music Association Carol Concert at St Andrews and, on Thursday 18 December 2014, we end the Autumn Term with our own Carol Service in Penrith Methodist Church. These are all lovely events – celebrations of the communities we belong to and the enthusiasm of our staff and students for collaborative working.
On Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday 15th, 16th and 17th December, the Drama Department is staging its production or George Orwells’ Animal Farm. There are two casts and staff and students have worked hugely hard to stage this chilling fable of Soviet Russia’s Communist dictatorship. Tickets are available from the Learning Resource Centre.
