This year the Creative Futures Festival has a had a theme: 'Think Global, Act Local' and it has proved to be bigger, better and more outward looking than before. The UCC Street Band kicked off our eclectic month of activities with a rousing set, followed the next day by a film screening of 'Tomorrow' to Year 9, and later in the week by a Repair Cafe and Free Shop delivered by PACT and a plastics presentation by CAfS. UCC also hosted their first ever 'Cumbria's Schools Arts Conference'. There has been face painting, circus skills and zumba, music concerts, dance shows and our fantastic pop-up cinema in the lecture theatre. Alumni students have shared skills and experiences. Week 3 saw an amazing food festival which promoted healthy living and new tastes for all to try. In the final week non-uniform day proceeds will go to 3 environmental charities and fabulous arts prizes for the best costumes have been provided for the second year by Specialist Arts & Crafts. It truly has been a festival of an extra special kind!

We are coming to the end of another enjoyable and successful year, and one which will see my departure after thirty years at UCC. It has been a privilege to lead such an amazing school and I will miss working with such a great group of staff and students. As the final day of term (Friday 19 July) rapidly approaches, I am writing with details of the arrangements for the end of term and to remind students about the beginning of the next academic year. Seven UCC students worked with Workington Academy on a Physics trip to CERN in Switzerland. It is the world’s largest scientific research facility and some of the pioneering scientists who work there guided around our students. As part of the visit in Geneva the students experienced the United Nations and the International Red Cross. To cap this we visited Europe’s highest mountain Monte Blanc and ventured into an excavated ice-cave inside a moving glacier!
On 3rd July, the Sea Cadets came to school to run a fun Marine Engineering workshop with some lucky year 7’s. They firstly learnt about buoyancy and then had the challenge of designing, testing and building a 10x20cm boat out of a sheet of paper, tin foil and tape. The winning 2 teams created crafts which held 200 marbles, quite an achievement out of those limited resources! Well done to Laura, Jake, Eliza and Maia for winning the challenge by using the science knowledge learned to design robust boats.
After months of planning and collaborating with 'Curious Minds - Champions of Cultural Education', UCC hosted its very first 'Cumbria's Schools Arts Conference'. We welcomed roughly 100 colleagues from arts, cultural and education backgrounds to learn more about Arts Award, Artsmark and funding as well as gaining new practical ideas for delivering creative projects. There were performances from Dowdales School dancers and acoustic performances from UCC musicians. A marketplace of arts and cultural organisations gave colleagues the chance to find out more about what is happening in the county as well as to initiate new partnerships. We hope that this is just the beginning of being able to offer even more rich and diverse cultural opportunities for our young people. The day ended with an explosion of sound provided by the wonderful UCC Street Band.
A big well done to Year 11 as they celebrated the end of the exams with their prom at the Roundthorn. Congratulations on all you've accomplished in your five years at UCC - we look forward to welcoming back those who are attending Sixth Form at UCC next year and good luck to those who are moving on to apprenticeships, jobs or further training. Well done! You can see a selection of your photos in this term's Success Magazine or in your prom gallery below:
